Medal of Honor by DreamWorks Interactive, released in 1999 for PlayStation, was one of the first games to seriously try to bring the experience of World War II into the first-person shooter format, long before the genre became mainstream. Steven Spielberg, serving as producer and concept creator, wanted to capture the spirit of Saving Private Ryan in interactive form, and that intention is felt in every level.
The player takes on the role of Jimmy Patterson, an OSS officer carrying out covert operations in occupied France, Norway, and Germany. Unlike most shooters of the time, this was not just about shooting waves of enemies: missions involved sabotage, stealing documents, destroying facilities, and escaping right under the enemy’s nose. That gave the game the feel of real espionage work rather than ordinary arcade shooting.
The technical side was impressive for its time: the engine conveyed the grit and weight of warfare, German soldiers reacted to noise, and the levels offered noticeable variety — from the beaches of Normandy to snowy fjords. The soundtrack, composed by Michael Giacchino in an orchestral style, was especially important and helped define the tone of the series for years to come.
The game was not without flaws: gamepad controls could be awkward, enemy AI was inconsistent, and some missions suffered from unclear objectives that forced the player to wander around the level aimlessly. Even so, for 1999 it was a bold and carefully made release that set a new standard for console war shooters.
Medal of Honor laid the foundation on which both Call of Duty and Brothers in Arms would later build. It proved that World War II could become a serious artistic subject — with atmosphere, story, and emotional weight, rather than just a backdrop for mindless shooting.
