Star Wars: Empire at War by Petroglyph Games, released in 2006, is one of the few Star Wars strategy games that truly conveyed the scale of the conflict between the Empire and the Rebels. The game offered two gameplay layers: a galactic strategic map, where the player managed economy, diplomacy and fleet movements, and tactical battles — both space engagements and ground operations. The combination felt ambitious and generally worked, although ground combat lagged behind space battles in depth and spectacle.

Space battles were unquestionably the game’s strongest element. Fleets of Star Destroyers, cruisers and fighters clashed in real time, and smart ship positioning, target selection and the use of heroes — like Darth Vader or Han Solo — genuinely influenced battle outcomes. The game captured the saga’s signature aesthetic: the slow, majestic motion of capital ships, swarms of TIE fighters, and familiar film sounds. Fans of the universe got what they expected.

Ground battles, by contrast, were noticeably weaker. Units moved awkwardly, maps felt cramped, and tactical depth was limited — most fights came down to simple numerical superiority. AT‑ATs and AT‑STs looked impressive, but the ground phase often became routine in gameplay terms. It was a clear imbalance that didn’t ruin the game but felt like an undercooked half of the concept.

The campaign covered events between Episodes III and IV, which was an interesting choice — a relatively unexplored period that sits in a gray area of canon. Playing as the Empire and as the Rebels delivered different experiences: one side leaned on resources and blunt power, the other on guerrilla tactics. That variety added replay value, especially with the Forces of Corruption expansion, which introduced a third faction and significantly expanded content.

Today Empire at War is seen as a game of unrealized potential that nevertheless carved out a special place in fans’ hearts. Despite its rough edges, the original remains one of the best attempts to build a full‑fledged strategy set in the Star Wars universe.
