Project Reality: Battlefield 2 is a tactical multiplayer shooter that grew from a modification for Battlefield 2 into a standalone game. Project Reality: Battlefield 2 was created with the goal of making combat far more realistic than the original: discipline, squad coordination, player communication, and sound tactics matter here — not fast-paced arcade firefights.

The game offers large-scale battles with up to 100 players, dozens of maps, and more than 25 factions, including the armies of the USA, UK, Russia, Germany, insurgents, Taliban, and forces from the Vietnam War and World War II. Players have access to realistically modelled weapons, armoured vehicles, aircraft, and support systems.

Project Reality significantly reworks the mechanics of the original Battlefield 2. The game removes the usual arcade elements such as a permanent HUD, enemy markers, spawning on teammates, or firing without accounting for recoil. A single mistake can cost you your life, and achieving success without teamwork is virtually impossible.

Officers, commanders, and specialised classes play a major role — each fulfils a strictly defined function within the squad combat system:

  • Commander — manages the entire team: assigns objectives, calls in artillery and air support, deploys reconnaissance (UAV), and coordinates squads on the global map.

  • Officer / Squad Leader — leads their squad, places rally points, communicates with the commander, marks targets, and organises the actions of their soldiers.

  • Medic — heals and revives wounded soldiers, keeping the squad combat-ready during battle.

  • Engineer — builds and repairs fortifications, FOBs, and vehicles.

  • Logistician / Vehicle Crew — delivers ammunition and resources, supports construction and supply operations.

  • Anti-Tank / Anti-Air — destroys armoured vehicles and aircraft.

  • Machine Gunner / Fire Support — suppresses the enemy with sustained fire and holds positions.

  • Scout / Sniper — conducts observation, identifies targets, and operates at long range.

Some modes feature asymmetric conflicts where one side plays as a regular army and the other as insurgents and civilian collaborators.

Despite the age of its engine, Project Reality is still valued for its atmosphere, tense firefights, and the unique feeling of a large-scale military operation. It is one of the deepest tactical shooters of its time, and its ideas later formed the foundation for Squad, developed by former PR developers. The game remains demanding in terms of patience and teamwork: high realism, a steep learning curve, and a slow pace make it far from the easiest shooter for newcomers.
